About Course

An Introduction to the Norwegian Language
Elementary Norwegian Course Level A1 follows The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR).
As a beginner level course no previous knowledge of Norwegian is needed. However being familiar with the Latin Alphabet will be necessary. If you are able to read this, you already are! 🙂
  1. Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  2. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  3. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Norwegian Language Course A1 Part2

About Course

An Introduction to the Norwegian Language

Some very basic knowledge of Norwegian is needed (Norwegian Language Course A1 Part 1 or similar).

Norwegian Language Course A2 Part1

About Course

Norwegian Language Course A2 Part 1 is the first of two courses covering the A2 level. When you have finished the A2 level you will be able to understand daily life Norwegian quite well.
1. I can understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment). I can catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
2. I can read very short, simple texts. I can find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus and timetables and I can understand short simple personal letters.
3. I can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. I can handle very short social exchanges, even though I can’t usually understand enough to keep the conversation going myself.
4. I can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms my family and other people, living conditions, my educational background and my present or most recent job.
5. I can write short, simple notes and messages. I can write a very simple personal letter, for example thanking someone for something.

Norwegian Language Course A2 Part 2 is the second of two courses covering the A2 level. When you have finished the A2 level you will be able to understand daily life Norwegian quite well.

Norwegian Language Course B1 Part2

About Course

Norwegian Language Course B1 part 2 is the second of two courses covering the B1 level. When you have finished the B1 level you will be able to understand and use Norwegian in most situations.
  1. Norwegian Language Course B2 Part1

About Course

The B2 course is all about finalizing your understanding of the Norwegian language. Improve your conversational skills and enhance the technical part of the language. You will be equipped to handle all common language situations in Norway and do so confidently.
  1. Being at a B2 level in Norwegian means that you have a good vocabulary related to your own daily life, in addition to your own subject area. You can give lectures on topics related to your own daily life, but also about politics, the environment and the media. You can give instructions and messages, and understand some Norwegian dialects. You should be able to critically evaluate texts and use different learning strategies as needed. You can write texts in various genres, such as minutes, abstracts and argumentative texts.

    A B2 student can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

    In this first part of the B2 course we will cover topics such as:

    1. Norway to day and facts about Norway.
    2. Daily life for most Norwegians.
    3. Norway a multicultural country.
    4. Schools and higher education in Norway.
    5. Work – life in Norway. What is it like?
    6. Climate and environmental challenges.
    7. Health and health related issues.

    The course also offers lots of exercises and tips needed to reach the B2 level.

    The will be some assignments which are important to complete in order to get the necessary language practice at the B2 level.

    In addition there will be some information about the Bergenstest and other tests at the B2 level.

Norwegian Grammar Course A2 – B2

About Course

This Norwegian grammar covers what is needed to pass formal Norwegian language tests from A2 to B2/C1 level.

This is the perfect companion to your online Norwegian courses. For A1 students it might be a little difficult since the spoken language in the videos are in Norwegian. Any student from A2 and upward will understand the spoken language in the videos.

The course starts with the very basic grammars and covers more advanced topics as the student progresses.

After each section there are links to exercises connected to the subject taught. There are also links to other external resources covering the same subject. This is useful in case you need the subject explained in a slightly different manner. This is also good for repetition of the subjects.

Is Norwegian difficult to learn?

Norwegian is ranked as 3rd and sometimes 4th easiest language to learn for English speakers. So don’t worry, it doesn’t become much easier than Norwegian!

Is it expensive to learn Norwegian?

Learning Norwegian doesn’t need to be expensive! You can buy cheap Norwegian courses at this site. In the courses you’ll find links to free online Norwegian resources.

Are there any Norwegian language requirements?

Depending on your goals there may be different requirements. 

  1. To get a Norwegian Citizenship you need to pass a formal Norwegian exam at B1 level, both written and oral exam. 
  2. If you want to work in a hospital or in a school you need to pass both oral and written exams at B2 level. 
  3. B2 is also required at Universities and Colleges in Norway if the lectures are given in Norwegian and/or if the curriculum is in Norwegian.
